AmaWaterways, Viking, or Tauck? I’ve Sailed Them All and Here’s the Real Difference

By: Barb Strait

Let’s get real for a second: choosing a river cruise is nothing like picking an ocean cruise. On the ocean, you’re usually choosing between “The Big Ship with the Go-Karts” or “The Elegant Ship with the White Gloves.” But on the rivers of Europe, the ships all look remarkably similar from the outside (thanks to those pesky low bridges and narrow locks).

However, once you step across that gangway? The world changes.

As the owner of Straight Away Travel, I’ve made it my personal mission to be more than just a voice on the phone. I’ve actually been on every single major river cruise line. I’ve slept in the beds, eaten the Chef’s Table dinners, tested the Wi-Fi in the middle of the Danube, and biked through the vineyards of the Wachau Valley.

I’m what you’d call a specialty travel agent with “boots on the ground” experience. Why does that matter to you? Because these trips are an investment. When you’re looking for the best travel agency for vacation packages, you don’t want someone reading from a brochure; you want someone who knows which ship has the best coffee machine and which one will actually give you enough legroom in the cabin.  So, let’s break down three of them, Viking, AmaWaterways, and Tauck, so you can stop guessing and start packing.  Viking is going to be in a “value premier” category for me.  AmaWaterways is a “premier category” and Tauck is “ultra luxury”

Viking: The “Thinking Person’s” Minimalist Masterpiece

If you’ve ever watched PBS, you’ve seen the Viking commercials. They are the giants of the industry, and for good reason. Viking has a very specific “vibe”: it’s clean, it’s Scandi-chic, and it’s remarkably consistent.

The Vibe: No Frills, Just Focus

Viking calls itself the “Thinking Person’s Cruise.” You won’t find a gym or spa, you will find the rooms are pretty plain, you will be offered only one excursion at each port, and no included cocktail hour.  What you will find is serene light wood, cozy furs on the deck chairs, and a focus on the destination.

What I loved:

  • Consistency: If you’ve sailed one Viking Longship, you’ve sailed them all. You’ll know exactly where the lounge is and where to find the cookies.
  • The Aquavit Terrace: This is the best spot on the river for an alfresco lunch. It has a retractable glass wall that makes you feel like you’re floating on the river.
  • Value: Viking is often the most budget-friendly entry point into river cruising, especially with their frequent airfare deals.

The Reality Check:
Viking ships carry about 190 guests, and the standard cabins are on the smaller side (around 135 sq. ft.). It’s elegant but minimalist. Think of it as the “High-End Ikea” of the river, beautiful and functional, but you pay extra for the “extras” like gratuities and premium spirits.

AmaWaterways: The Active, Foodie, “Welcome Home” Line

If Viking is the sophisticated library, AmaWaterways is the warm, lively dinner party at a friend’s house. It’s family-owned, and you can feel that soul in every interaction.

The Vibe: Wellness, Wine, and Wonders

AmaWaterways is where I send my clients who can’t sit still. They were the first to put a fleet of bicycles on their ships, and they have a dedicated Wellness Host on every sailing.  They have more inclusions like the daily cocktail hour that is so relaxing and social!

What I loved:

  • The Food: Oh my goodness, the food! They are the only river cruise line invited to join La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a prestigious international culinary society. Every ship has “The Chef’s Table,” an intimate tasting menu experience that is included in your fare.
  • Active Excursions: While other lines might just offer a slow walking tour, Ama offers hiking and biking tours in almost every port.
  • Twin Balconies: Most cabins have a French balcony and a full outside balcony. It makes the room feel massive and lets the fresh air in.

The Reality Check:
With 164 guests, it’s a bit more intimate than Viking. It’s perfect for the traveler who wants a high-energy, boutique hotel feel. Plus, if you’re a fan of our Pickleball in Paradise trips, you’ll love Ama’s focus on staying active while seeing the world!

Tauck: The Ultra-Premium, “Hand Your Wallet to the Concierge” Choice

When people ask me for the absolute best travel agency for vacation packages that define “luxury,” I often point them toward Tauck. This isn’t just a cruise; it’s a fully orchestrated travel experience.

The Vibe: Exclusive, All-Inclusive, and Top-Tier

Tauck’s slogan should be “We’ve thought of everything so you don’t have to.” When they say all-inclusive, they mean it. Tips? Included. Airport transfers? Included (even if you didn’t book air through them). Premium spirits? Flowing like the Rhine.

What I loved:

  • Space: Tauck takes the same size ship that others put 190 people on and only invites 130 guests. The cabins are huge (most are 225 sq. ft.), and you never feel crowded.
  • The “Tauck Touch”: They have three Tauck Directors plus a Cruise Director on every ship. They handle every tiny detail.
  • Exclusive Access: Because of Tauck’s long history in land touring, they get you into places no one else can. Think private dinners in a Viennese palace where you are the only guests.

The Reality Check:
The price tag is higher upfront, but when you do the math on what you’d spend on tips, drinks, and high-end excursions elsewhere, the value is incredible. It’s for the traveler who wants zero stress and maximum pampering.
