Touring El Dorado Water Park in Cap Cana

By Stasi Sherlock

While we were in Punta Cana recently, our group had the chance to go see the El Dorado Water Park, and I’m really glad we did. I honestly didn’t know what to expect going in. When you hear “water park,” you usually picture a bunch of slides, concrete, crowds, and average food. This felt very different.  Upon entering, I instantly knew this was nothing I had ever seen before- water park meets Adventure Park.

The park opened in May 2024 and is located in Cap Cana, one of the more upscale areas of Punta Cana and only a short drive from the airport. For anyone staying at resorts like Secrets or Dreams Cap Cana, Hyatt Ziva or Zilara, or  Sanctuary Cap Cana, it’s especially convenient since it’s located right in that same area.

The first thing we noticed was how clean everything was.  Not just the pools, but the walkways, landscaping, and common areas. Large water parks can sometimes feel chaotic or overcrowded, but this one felt very well-maintained and easy to navigate.

It’s Bigger Than I Expected

The park sits on about 80,000 square meters, which makes it one of the larger water parks in the Caribbean. But it doesn’t feel like a giant amusement park when you’re walking through it.  There’s a lot of greenery, palm trees, and shaded walking paths, so it almost feels like you’re walking through a tropical park that happens to have water attractions built into it.

The design is themed around the legend of the lost city of El Dorado, and the main area is built around what they call a Water Temple, which gives the park a bit of an adventure feel instead of water slide.

An aerial, wide-angle view of the massive El Dorado Water Park resort surrounded by lush green vegetation. The complex features a large, bright blue wave pool with a sandy beach area, multiple winding water slides—including a prominent funnel slide and a tube slide twisting through a rock formation—and a long, winding lazy river snaking through the park. Thatch-roofed cabanas, palm trees, and a large outdoor amphitheater line the edges of the property next to a natural lake, showcasing an exciting vacation destination booked through straight away travel.

Not Just Slides

There are more than 20 attractions, including large thrill slides, family raft rides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and splash areas for younger kids. The park also limits capacity to around 3,500 guests per day, which helps keep the experience from feeling overly crowded. However, the space is so massive and so much to do that on the busiest days, it still won’t seem that way.

Families with kids and teens will probably get the most out of the slides and splash zones, but there are also plenty of areas where you can slow down and relax between activities.

Cenote-Inspired Areas

One part of the park we thought was really interesting was the cenote-style swimming areas. If you’ve ever been to Mexico or parts of the Caribbean, you’ve probably seen natural cenotes — those limestone sinkholes with clear water surrounded by rock and greenery.

El Dorado created areas that are inspired by that look and feel, which adds to the natural setting of the park. They’re quieter spaces where you can cool off and relax for a bit, which we all appreciated between walking around and checking out the different attractions.

A row of white lounge chairs neatly arranged on a white sand beach under the shade of thick, thatched palapa umbrellas. Curved palm tree trunks frame the left side of the shot, while a calm body of water and distant tropical greenery stretch out under a bright, partly cloudy sky on the right. A thin blue crop line is subtly visible on the right edge, capturing a relaxing beach scene perfect for a straight away travel getaway.

Private Tents, Villas, and Balinese Beds

Another thing that stood out was that instead of just offering standard cabanas like many water parks, El Dorado has several different private spaces you can rent for the day. Throughout the park, there are private tents,  private villas, and Balinese beds, which give families or small groups a shaded place to relax, store bags, and regroup throughout the day. These are available in certain areas of the park for guests who want a little more space and privacy. These felt more like the lounge areas you might see at a beach club or resort pool rather than a typical water park setup.

It’s a nice option if you’re traveling with a group or just want a more comfortable or elevated place to take breaks between attractions. If not, there are plenty of chairs, loungers, and umbrellas throughout the park.

The cabana is outfitted with a plush white mattress bed, matching back cushions, two tan throw pillows, and flowing white privacy curtains tied to the corner posts. Lush green bushes flank the right side, while palm trees and a bright blue sky with light clouds appear in the background, showcasing a premium relaxation spot for a straight away travel itinerary.

Let’s Talk Food

Another thing our group talked about was the food. Most water parks are pretty predictable when it comes to dining options, but this felt noticeably better than expected. There are several dining spots throughout the park, and the food felt more like casual restaurant options rather than typical theme-park food. They have 4  restaurants and cafes with plenty to choose from. If you’re planning to spend the day there, that definitely makes a difference.

A close-up, shallow-depth-of-field shot of several portions of a gourmet appetizer served on a table. The dish features a crispy, fried base topped with a savory spread, drizzled with a light green sauce, and garnished with black sesame seeds, fresh microgreens, and delicate sprouts. The food is neatly presented on black trays lined with decorative newspaper-print wax paper. In the blurred background, people are seated at the table enjoying the dining experience, showcasing a unique culinary highlight from a straight away travel excursion.

Who This Is Best For

Families with kids and teens will probably get the most out of it, but it’s also just a fun day off resort if you want to do something different while visiting Punta Cana. I mean how often can you say you were at one of the largest water parks in the Caribbean? However, I am still not calling it a water park- I am calling it a water  “experience”. And if you’re staying in Cap Cana, it’s especially convenient since the park is located right there.

Overall, our group really enjoyed seeing it in person. It’s always nice when something new opens in a destination and actually lives up to the hype.El Dorado feels less like a typical water park and more like a full outdoor experience with slides, nature areas, and places to relax throughout the day.  We always like seeing excursions like this firsthand because it makes it much easier to recommend experiences to our clients that we know are truly worth the time.
